Armistice Day is celebrated annually on November 11 in honor of the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front and the signing of peace in the First World War. The Treaty between the Allies and Germany was signed in Compiegne (France) and entered into force at eleven o'clock in the morning - at "the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. Although this date officially marked the end of the war on the Western Front, hostilities continued in other regions, especially in the countries of the former Russian Empire and parts of the old Ottoman Empire. The date was declared a national holiday in many allied states.
