Monument to the great Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, who reached in Amsterdam peak of his fame, and here was buried in a common grave of the poor near the Westerkerk was opened May 27, 1852 King William III. The monument was installed at the corner of the former here at the time of the oil market (Botermarkt) at the intersection and Reguliersdwarsstraat Thorbeckeplein. The author is a sculptor Louis Royer. In 1874 the building Waag, which is practically in the middle of Botermarkt, was demolished, and after remodeling in 1876, the area became known as Rembrandt Square and the monument was moved to its center. Today it is the oldest preserved monument in the Netherlands.
