In 1968, the stadium became the main arena of the 1968 Summer Olympic Games. For the duration of the games, according to the requirements of the IOC, the capacity of the arena was increased from 70,000 to 83,700 places. At the stadium, there were ceremonies of the opening and closing of games, as well as athletics, equestrian sports and a number of matches of the football Olympic tournament. Within the framework of the Olympic Games, the Tartan Track synthetic polyurethane coating was used within the stadium.
