After the market settlement of Hanover secured itself against enemy raids in the 14th century with a militia as part of Hanover's city fortifications, the people built a watchtower on the bare top of the Lindener Berg as part of the Hanoverian militia in 1392 , from which they controlled the access roads could overlook to Hanover. A watchtower was erected with the limestone quarried in the mountain 's quarry , which promised greater security to the residents at the foot of the Lindener Berg for more than a quarter of a millennium. After the Thirty Years' War, the ruler , Duke Georg Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Lüneburg, ordered in 1651 that the old tower be converted into a modern Dutch windmill with a rotatable upper part. The mill saved the farmers from the surrounding villages from having to go to the Calenberger mill near Schulenburg.
