Beginning in 1846 under the guidance of the Rev. Dr. Wm. A. Muhlenberg, rector of the Church of the Holy Communion, a public appeal for funds in 1850 resulted in the formation of a corporation and in subscriptions amounting to S100,000. An infirmary was opened on Sixth Avenue in 1854. This work was transferred to the newly erected hospital in 1858.
