Fifth Avenue, at the N.W. corner of West 54th Street, showing St. Luke's Hospital, erected in 1858. Beginning in 1846 under the guidance of the Rev. Dr. Wm. A. Muhlenberg, rector of the Church of the Holy Communion, a public appeal for funds in 1850 resulted in the formation of a corporation and in subscriptions amounting to S100,000. An infirmary was opened on Sixth Avenue in 1854. This work was transferred to the newly erected hospital in 1858.
