In 1923, the government of Mussolini decided to modernize the telephone system in Italy. The country was divided into five zones, within which concessions were given to private Italian companies, which did not exclude the participation of foreign companies. Together with British and Swedish banks, Ericsson created a syndicate that also took into account Italian interests. In 1924 this syndicate was transformed into an Italian company called Societa Esercizi Telefonici (SET). In 1925, SET received a concession to operate a telephone network in the fifth zone, namely in Southern Italy, including Sicily. The largest cities in this area were Naples, Palermo, Messina and Catania. The photo shows employees posing in the process of laying telephone cables in Sicily. In THE ERICSSON CHRONICLE the photo is signed as "Stringing cable in Sicily", but the site has another name: "Verona, squadra di operai e tecnici per la posa di linee aeree,1925".
