Milan Central Station is one of the main railway stations in Europe. The station was inaugurated in 1931 and replaced the old station (built in 1864), which was no longer able to cope with the increased passenger traffic due to the opening of the Sempione Tunnel in 1906. The architect Ulisse Stacchini[it] took the "Union Station" in Washington to reconstruct the station. The construction was rather slow because of the economic crisis in Italy after World War I. So coming to power is one of the biggest railway stations in Europe. The station was built in Art Deco style, though not in its entirety. Benito Mussolini radically changed the image of the station, the project itself, originally quite simple, became more and more complex and confusing. The plans of the new Prime Minister were to make the station so that it represented the power and strength of the fascist regime, the main change being the construction of a steel dome designed by Albert Fawn.
