En 1840, Joseph Chaley, qui venait de terminer la construction du grand pont suspendu de Fribourg , reçut une proposition des autorités de la ville de construire un pont sur la vallée du Gottéron. Suivant le même principe que son pont du Bolchoï, il a construit une structure de suspension légère à 151 m de long à 76 m au-dessus de la rivière.
