A deadly toxic cloud looms over Simi Valley at the intersection of Los Angeles Avenue and Madera Boulevard. The square-mile chlorine cloud formed after a leak at a textile plant and forced 11,500 residents out of their homes and into the rain, injuring 18 people and causing major traffic snarls. Firefighters in protective suits worked late into the evening to cap the leak. Photograph dated January 5, 1989.
