In 1871 Paris was shaken by an uprising of the revolutionary Commune, who set the town hall with the town archives on fire, leaving only the facade of the Renaissance from the the 16th century building. From 1874-1882 it was reconstructed true to the old style, and is since then undamaged. The facade is decorated with statues of famous personalities, the interior contains magnificent rooms from the time of the Third Republic. Once a month, the Commission consisting of both city councils as well as free members of associations and citizenships comes together to discuss issues relating to the preservation of the Parisian heritage.
