VG Korolenko, who lived as a child in Zhitomir near this old Polish cemetery in the story "V bad company", wrote: "V west side, on the hill, among the rotting crosses and sunken graves, was long ago abandoned Uniate chapel... in front of me were just quiet grave and destroyed the crosses... it was like a humble, quiet, deserted, empty chapel only the most looked, frowning, empty windows, just think some sad thought the chapel door was tightly boarded up windows -.. high above the earth only sparrows pottered around so silently swallows flew and flew out the window in the old chapel, which was, sadly drooping, among grassy graves, crosses modest, dilapidated stone tombs...". This chapel was destroyed during the Second World War
