On August 17, 1977, at 4 a.m. Moscow time, the nuclear-powered icebreaker "Arktika" was the first in the world to reach the geographical point of the North Pole in active navigation. A 10-meter steel rod was installed on the ice for the Soviet red banner, which was raised at 9:40 am Moscow time.
