Land is being leveled and cleared for construction of the 101 Freeway. In the distance, on the left, is the Garnier Building on N. Los Angeles Street. Part of the historic building had been demolished in order to make room for the new freeway. Across the street on the opposite corner is the Jin Hing Co. jewelry store located at 446 1/2 N. Los Angeles Street. The Garnier Building dates back to the original Chinatown in Los Angeles. It acted as an important community resource for Chinese Americans and housed many social and business groups. It is now home to the Chinese American Museum.
