The Gerichtsgefängnis (court prison) in Hanover partially stood on the site of today's Raschplatz and Pavilion. The prison, initially built as a royal cell prison, could accommodate more than 800 prisoners. The serial killer Fritz Haarmann was executed in the institution. This is where the KPD chairman Ernst Thälmann sat in solitary confinement for years. In 1963, the Hanover correctional facility on Schulenburger Landstraße was occupied as a replacement.
