Green Street House

It's hard to believe that this old country house, had it survived, would be in built-up East Ham, London. Since publishing the story of Green Street House this remarkable photograph has come to light. The image is from April 1906, and was headed 'A Tudor Castle for Sale.' Anne Boleyn's Castle (the name afforded to Green Street House) had been used as an industrial school, and was due to go to market. Local tradition had it that Henry VIII bought the castle and presented it to Anne Boleyn before he was divorced from Catherine of Aragon, and that it was the scene of his courtship. Even more remarkable is that the house gave its name to The Boleyn Ground, the home of West Ham United until 2016, better known as Upton Park, whose stadium was built alongside. The house was demolished in 1955.
