Grandfather's photo archive. Trip to the GDR 1969, Leipzig. Leipzig Central Stadium (German: Zentralstadion) was opened on August 4, 1956 during the II German Gymnastics and Sports Festival. The Centralstadion was designed for 100 spectators and was the largest in the GDR and throughout Germany. The stadium was built by 180 thousand volunteers over the course of a year.
