The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (in Finnish Jumalansynnyttäjän kuolonuneen nukkumisen katedraali) is the cathedral of the Helsinki diocese of the Finnish Archdiocese and the largest Orthodox cathedral of Northern Europe. The ceremonial laying of the temple took place on August 15, 1862 in the presence and with the participation of the Grand Dukes Aleksey Aleksandrovich and Nikolai Konstantinovich, who sailed along the Baltic Sea. A characteristic feature of the cathedral is that all four supporting columns remain within that part of the temple, which is intended for pilgrims. These columns are carved from monolithic granite stone. The altar is located outside the main volume. The iconostasis does not stand, as usual, on the line of two eastern pillars and does not divide the temple into parts, on the contrary, the entire volume of the temple, seen by pilgrims, is perceived as a single common hall. The cathedral was consecrated on Sunday October 13, 1868.
