The consecration of the synagogue on Johannisstrasse 16 took place in September 1854. The community, consisting of 700 adherents of reformism in Judaism, held ceremonies in a liberal spirit (rejection of hats, sexual segregation, the use of the German language in prayers, the introduction of a mixed choir and organ accompaniment ).
