Work on the construction of an international bridge in Salamanc began on August 31, 1883, opened on December 9, 1887. The bridge is located at the merger of Agueda and Douro rivers, in the area with a very cool mountain terrain, which significantly influenced the draft bridge. The first project assumed the construction of a bridge 180 m above for the flow and at an angle of 90 ° to the shore. Several projects were rejected, as a result, the bridge was built at an angle of 60 ° in relation to the axis of the river line on January 19, 1985 due to low economic profitability, the line was closed for the movement of people and goods.
