The need for a separate building for the Municipal Theater has become particularly noticeable at the end of the XIX century. At this time Lvov was part of Austria-Hungary, it was officially called Lemberg and was the capital of the Austrian province of individual large - Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomerii.V 1895 announced a competition, which was won by the project director of the Lviv Higher Industrial Art School Z. Gorgolewski. He proposed a bold decision to build a new theater space. Since the center of the city at that time was a densely built, the project involved the overlap of urban river Poltva, solid concrete vaults. Z. Gorgolewski oversaw all excavation and construction work. The main burden fell on the Lviv company engineer I. Levinsky. Construction began in June 1897 and lasted almost three goda.Teatr built in the classical tradition with elements of the Renaissance and Baroque architectural style, in the spirit of the so-called Vienna psevdorenessansa.
