The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is a double-decker suspension bridge designed by civil engineer Othmar Hermann Ammann and city planner Robert Moses that connects the New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn. Construction of the Verrazzano Bridge began on August 13, 1959 and was completed on November 21, 1964 , cost $320 million ($2.6 billion in today's dollars). The bridge is named after Giovanni de Verrazzano, who was the first European explorer to visit New York Harbor in 1524. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is currently the longest suspension bridge in the United States at 4,260 feet and was the longest in the world at the time of its completion.
