Photograph caption dated April 30, 1963 reads, "Mike Miller, Van Nuys construction worker, rides along as a giant crane lifts a dome and belfry to the top of Holy Martyrs Armenian Apostolic Church in Encino. The dome and belfry was built inside the church and had to be lifted up through an opening in the roof and into place. The new church, to be opened in about 60 days, is a replica of the Cathedral of Ani, located in Armenia. The cathedral was finished in the 10th Century and was the work of Armenian architect Tridate, who not only built Armenian churches but also was the first to use crossed arches for domes and windows, an idea which eventually led to the Gothic architecture of Europe in the 13th century. The Encino church, under construction since September, will hold 250 persons. These pictures show the laborious task of the crane as it picks up the dome and places it on the structure, completing the replica of the Armenian cathedral."
