This small town in North Holland was named after Anna Pavlovna - the youngest daughter of Emperor Paul I. AP (1795-1865) was the sixth monarch's daughter and the eighth child in the royal family. In 1816 she was married to the Dutch Prince of Orange William, who in 1840 became King William II. Anna gave birth to four sons and one daughter, the current King of the Netherlands Willem-Alexander is its direct descendant. She founded the 50 shelters for children and the poor, erected at his own expense a hospital and a home for the disabled. Who lived in a big way the king built the expensive locks, gathered an impressive collection of art, regardless of the cost, and the queen left in debt after his death. She sought the help of his brother Nicholas I with a proposal to buy a collection of paintings by Dutch artists, so as not to extinguish the debt at the expense of the state. Nikolai bought paintings, which are still kept in the Hermitage.
