Photo album ΑΘΗΝΑ 1839-1900. The building of the Athens City Theater is one of the most important buildings on Theater Square (now Kotzia Square). Its construction began in 1857 according to the project of the French architect François F. Boulanger. It was the first major theater in Athens after the Bokur Theater. Construction faced many political and economic problems and was stopped for a long time. In 1871, the German architect Ernst Ziller changed the design of the theater, but work was again stopped. In 1886, after the intervention of the great businessman Andreas Sigros, the building was completed. The theater was ready for opening in 1888. In 1922-1927, he was severely affected by immigrants from Asia Minor who made temporary housing there. Repair began in 1928, but its cost was enormous, which became a verdict for the theater. The repair was not completed, and in 1939 the mayor Andrea Kotzia decided to demolish it.
