Operation Crossroads. The Baker bomb was detonated under water at a depth of 27 meters on July 25, 1946. Four obsolete American battleships, two aircraft carriers, two cruisers, eleven destroyers, eight submarines, numerous auxiliary and amphibious ships and three ships captured from Japan and Germany became target ships. A total of 95 targets. In preparation for Operation Crossroads, residents of the Bikini Atoll were evacuated and relocated to smaller, uninhabited islands. Later, in the 1950s, as a result of a series of large thermonuclear tests, the Bikini became unsuitable for agriculture and fishing.
