Historic Alamo Square is a park and neighborhood in San Francisco, California. It was created by Mayor James Van Ness in 1856/1857. The park spans four city blocks on a hill. It is bounded by Hayes Street on the south, Fulton Street on the north, Scott Street on the west, and Steiner Street on the east. A row of Victorian houses called "Postcard Row" is one of the most photographed residential streets in America. Some of the houses are brightly painted, which is why they are called Painted Ladies. Especially the magnificent row of houses on Steiner Street is the most famous example of the Queen Anne style, which was developed around 1890.
