Place Maubert in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, in the district of the Sorbonne. The name is due either to the abbot of the nearby abbey Ste-Geneviève or to the German scholar and bishop Albertus Magnus. The square has a long history, dating back to the 13th century. Here one of the oldest markets of Paris takes place (introduced in the 16th century). The old photograph was taken by Charles Marville, who was commissioned by the city with the documentation of the old city before Haussmann's refurbishment and modernization. His photos show many old streets and buildings before their destruction. As seen here in the picture pair, a group of houses was replaced by a building with the characteristic Haussmann front. The remainder was largely preserved in its form. It seemed to be much quieter here back then...
