The Pump house was originally used for the main line to pump water from a shallow bore hole in the ground up to the main Aberystwyth Station for the engines. The reason for the pump house being built about a mile away from the station was due to this being the closest area where the water was clean and without sea salt present in it, due to be so close to the coast. The bore hole would collect the run off rain and surface water and the pump house would then pump the water to the station.
