In this photograph we can see two militiamen from the “Juanita Rico” Company, which was created in Yecla in 1936, made up mostly of communists and socialists. This Company fought in the Spanish Civil War as part of the Fifth Regiment of Popular Militias, under the command of Commander Francisco Varela, they fought in the Sierra de Madrid. The Company receives its name from a socialist militant murdered in an attack perpetrated by the extreme right on June 10, 1934. The two militiamen appear on a Schneider 70/16 mountain cannon, model 1908. These weapons were at the end of their useful life when the conflict broke out and that is why they were distributed among the infantry at the rate of one per battalion.
