The Newport Union High School district was created on September 21, 1929, and a Ground Breaking Ceremony took place on June 14, 1930. It only took three months and $410,000 to complete the original school building, inspired by Spanish Gothic architecture, with tiled rooftops and the use of arches in walkways and windows. On September 22, 1930 the school officially opened its doors with 12 faculty members and 178 students in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. The first class graduated in June 1932 and consisted of 54 students. The 1940s saw many improvements such as the addition of the Math wing, consisting of 5 classrooms, at a cost of $44,470 the addition of the Bell Tower the construction of the metal and machine shops and the snack bar, girl's gym and A.H. Fitzpatrick Pool were built
