Vardzia cave monastery complex in Javakheti, about 100 km south of Borjomi. Vardzia monastery ensemble was created mainly in 1156-1205 gg., In the reign of George III and his daughter Queen Tamara. Situated on the south-western border of Georgia in the Kura River Valley (Mtkvari) monastery-fortress overlaps Gorge Chickens from invading Iranians and Turks from the south. Over 900 meters along the left bank of the Kura River in the steep mountainside Erusheti tuffs (Bear) is carved about 600 spaces: churches, chapels, residential cells, storage rooms, saunas, a refectory, treasuries, libraries. The premises of the complex go 50 meters into the rock and rise to a height of eight floors. Kept secret passages linking the premises, the remnants of water supply and irrigation systems. Initially, all of the monastery premises were hidden rock, with their combined surface only three underground passage through which large groups of soldiers could appear unexpectedly for the enemy.
