Construction of the Arlington Memorial Bridge across the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., in the United States in 1927. This image shows the dredging operations (center, bottom) that are reshaping Columnia Island by removing about 40 acres of the island's surface but also depositing material dredged from the river bottom onto the island to raise it to a height of about 26 feet above the mean water level. It also shows the construction of cofferdams, abutments and piers (center) which will form the bridge. Along the D.C. shorline (top, diagonally left to right), a seawall is being built and trees have been felled to make way for the "watergate steps" leading from the Lincoln Memorial to the water.
