La Lanterna (Italian: Lanterna di Genova or simply Lanterna) - the main lighthouse of the port of Genoa. It is a symbol of Genoa. It belongs to the oldest surviving lighthouses in the world. The height of the lighthouse reaches 77 meters, 375 steps lead to the top. It occupies the second place in the list of the highest "traditional" lighthouses in the world. The highest lighthouse in Italy and the Mediterranean Sea. The first lighthouse at this place was built around 1128. In those days, the lighthouse was located on an important port road known as Via di Francha, and was quite far from the city limits, and only in the 17th century the area around the lighthouse was included in the urban area of Genoa, inside the defensive walls. The first centuries of the lighthouse's existence used firewood from dried juniper and other wood species.
