Augustów
Augustow - the county town of Suvalka province, located at r. Nepte and Lake White, in a low and marshy area, was founded in 1560 by King Sigismund Augustus, from which he got his name. Currently, it has 15 thousand inhabitants, most of whom are Jews and Catholics. From the provincial city of Suwalki - 20 versts (by rail), from the Prussian border - 15 versts. Due to the proximity of the border and the large number of troops, both on the border and within the boundaries of the Suwalk province, life products are expensive. In the city there are educational institutions: 4-class urban (male), women's private gymnasium and four elementary schools. Two churches: diocesan and military - 104th infantry. Ustyug Regiment.
