In the night of August 12 to 13, 1961, the SED decided to remove the sector border to the West. Initially, the borders were only secured with a barbed wire and a wall for a few days. By building the Berlin Wall, the East Berliners should be prevented from fleeing to West Berlin. At the same time, the GDR wanted to secure and demonstrate its power and sovereignty. The wall was further expanded until the case in 1989, since the escape movements could never be completely stopped. The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989.
