The Belle Alliance Bridge (since 1947 Mehringbrücke since 1947) built in 1874-76 forms a first-order traffic junction with the second strongest car traffic in Berlin. The high vehicle frequency of approximately 1000 horse railway cars and up to 8000 wagons daily leads to considerable road damage after just a few years. In connection with the new Bridge, in 1877-79 instead of the guard building of the old Halleschen Tor, two representative head buildings decorated with allegorical figures of the four seasons were created at the entrance to the Belle Alliance Platz (since 1947 Mehringplatz) according to Johann Heinrich Stracks.
