Berlin
The water features illuminated in the dark on the central island of the square, designed by Werner Düttmann and Bernhard Hermkes in 1959/60, convey a cosmopolitan flair in conjunction with the lights of the surrounding office work. The illuminated lettering "Telefunken", "Osram" and "AEG" also signal a reduction in the electrical industry, one of the most important Berlin industry before the war. The shortage of labor caused by the wall construction was tried to compensate for by recruiting guest workers, until the 1970s started a massive loss of industrial jobs.
