France > Hauts-de-France > Nord > LilleThe Grande-Place (now Place du Général-de-Gaulle) at the end of the First World War The city was occupied from 1914 to 1918 by the Germans. I do not know for what purpose the many trucks are on the square, most likely for military reasons, possibly in connection with the liberation of the city. In the middle is the "Colonne de la Déesse", which commemorates the successful defense against the siege by Austria in 1792.
