Bastille ( "little bastion"), also known as the official name of the Bastide Saint-Antoine, was built in the period from 1370 by 1383 as a fortress for the defense of Paris during the Hundred Years War. At the beginning of XVII century the fortress was turned into a prison storming of the Bastille crowds enraged people July 14, 1789 marked the beginning of the French Revolution. The prison was destroyed during the Revolution. Located in the center of the square tower called the July Column (Colonne de Juillet) it was erected in the period from 1831 to 1840 in honor of the July Revolution of 1830, which resulted in power in the country passed to King Louis-Philippe.
