The size of the island is small - in diameter it does not exceed 200 m, but its main value is its strategic location right at the entrance to the bay, it seems to close it with a castle, which was appreciated by the military who decided to build a defensive fort here. On one side of the island is Cape Prevlaka on the border with Croatia, and on the other, the Lustica Peninsula, approximately in the area of ​​Zhanitsa Bay. The direct line to Herceg Novi is about 6 km. The Austrian fortress on the island in the middle of the 19th century was built by General Lazar Mamula, who was the governor of the Kingdom of Dalmatia in 1859-1865. This vassal state of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at that time controlled many cities of the Bay of Kotor and needed to protect its possessions from encroachments from the sea
