Photograph caption dated March 2, 1983 reads, "The remains of the LAPD helicopter, its tail dangling, that crashed at 51st Street and Broadway." Pilot Sgt. Ronnie Hansen and Officer Tom Brooks were onboard with the accident victim, Reserve Officer Stuart Taira, who was scheduled to use a video camera to capture damage caused by a tornado that had hit South Los Angeles. Soon after take-off, the helicopter struck a power line and crashed to the ground. Taira was struck by a rotor when he stepped out of the damaged Bell Jet Ranger.
