[United stereopair.] The Disabled Column, officially the National War Memorial in Invalide, was a monument to the Prussian army soldiers who died in the battles of 1848 and 1849. The column stood in the Berlin Invalidepark. Shortly after installation, the monument became considered one of the Prussian national monuments. The height of the granite pedestal is 5.96 m, the height of the column is 33.70 m. At the top was an observation deck, to which inside the column there was a spiral staircase with 189 steps. The eagle, the symbol of Prussia and the monarchy of Hohenzollerns, was about 2 meters high and had a wingspan of about 8 meters. On the facade there was a medallion with a relief portrait of Frederick William IV and the inscription: "A national monument to the soldiers in memory of brothers and comrades in arms who died in 1848 and 1849, faithful to their duty for the king and the fatherland, was erected by the Association for the Support of Berg and Mark on June 18 1852.
