11th Avenue, north from W 34th street showing this thoroughfare prior to the removal of railroad equipment and its general rehabilitation. At the left, occupying the 34th to 35th street frontage, is the distinctive former Manhattan Market shed (erected 1871). This was razed in several stages, years apart. First the original 3-story structure was reduced to the one story building shown, and subsequently the Avenue frontage was cleared. The final stage occurred in 1946 when the sheds on the street sides were removed.
