The mall stands north of the San Bernardino Freeway (10), seen vertically at left, between Barranca Ave. (horizontally at upper middle), Citrus St. (not visible), and Workman Ave. (vertically at left). Also visible are Clifton's Cafeteria and Longs Drugs. Photograph dated November 21, 1962. Eastland Center was designed by architect Albert C. Martin and opened in the fall of 1957 as an outdoor mall along the San Bernardino Freeway (10). The mall was unique at the time, as it had a regular mall on the upper level, and a strip center on the lower level facing the freeway. It opened with a 5-level May Company on the east end of the mall and a 2-level W.T. Grant on the west end. W.T. Grant closed in 1976 and was converted into shops on the upper level. The mall closed and expanded in 1979. Mervyns was added on to the west end of the mall in the 1980s.
