Rilly-la-Montagne
Rillly la Montagne is one of the oldest village of the Champagne region. Backing onto the mountain of Rheims and overlooking vineyards, Rilly la Montagne has kept its character and traditions of a small Champagne village.View on the village townhall. The townhall has been constructed & inaugurated in 1884. Built on Place de la Gravière (Gravel Quarry square), now called Republique square. Its architectural style is typical of State owned administration of the 3rd Republique. Its higher central part and two symetrical wings, all of them having a slate mansard roof and dressed stone walls, gives a reliability and poist impression. The townhall square has been used until the WW2 for celebrations and public meetings. Initially, at the inauguration, was a wooden bandstand used for music and official speakers. Its has been replaced by a concrete one in 1928, which unfortunately got destroyed in 1944 by the Allies bombing.
