The Palace of the popes ("Palais des popses") in Avignon was residence of the popes between 1335 and 1430. It is the largest Gothic construction of the Middle Ages. It was used as a barracks after the French Revolution and was badly damaged by vandalism. From the 19th century, it was gradually restored. Today it belongs to the world cultural heritage and is one of the most important tourist sites of the region.
