In 1805, there was a large market square on this place, which was later named after the Russian Emperor Alexander I. Due to the rapid population growth during the industrialization, Alexander Square became popular among poor people. Pre-war buildings (Alexanderhaus (Sitz der Bankgesellschaft Berlin) and Berolinahaus) have also been preserved on Alexander Square.
