The main entrance to the Old Synagogue of Essen was used when a large number of believers visited the synagogue. The building was designed for 1,500 people. On weekdays, one could get inside through the side entrance. The architect Edmund Kärner himself photographed his creation, his photographs fell into a book on the synagogue published in 1914 by Ernst Wasmuth A.-G.
