Aerial view of Long Beach and the Port of Long Beach view is looking north from approximately 12,000 feet. The Los Angeles River is visible along the left, spilling into the ocean Pike and Municipal Auditorium is just below the center, and the city spans far into the distance. Photograph dated December 2, 1955. The original Long Beach Municipal Auditorium was constructed in 1932 on the beach, surrounded on three sides by a lagoon. Because of problems created by storms and coastal erosion, a horseshoe (rainbow) shaped breakwater was constructed around the 8,000-seat auditorium in order to protect it. Because of its shape, it was named "Rainbow Pier", and arched from Pine Avenue to Linden Avenue. In the late 1940s, the city filled in the water to make more land. Unfortunately, the Municipal Auditorium and bandstand area were demolished in 1975 to make way for the Convention & Entertainment Center.
