The castle was built in 1490 2nd Lord Gray in response to the increased activity of the British fleet. He was taken without a single shot by the British in 1547 and returned to the Scots two and a half years later. Castle has again got into the hands of the British in 1651 In 1860, the threat of a French invasion prompted the move from the ruins to modern artillery defense. The castle was further modified in response to the German threat in the two world voynah.V castle now a museum.
